The waiting time may change while your application is with the UDI. The indicated waiting time tells you the waiting time for the applications we process now. The waiting time you find on our website is calculated from when you have submitted the documents for the application to the police in Norway or at the application center/embassy abroad. Here you can read what can make the waiting time change and how you can stay up to date on our waiting times.

You will also find information about when the waiting time is calculated from and whether the waiting time can change after you have submitted your application.

Very few applications can be prioritised. To request priority, you must send us

• a detailed explanation
• documentation, for example a medical certificate

You cannot request priority by phone, chat or email.

UDI cannot provide appointments for attendance or answer questions about appointments. Here you will find information about booking of appointments and attendance.

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA/Schengen Area, you must have a valid residence card if you are going to travel. 

If you do not have a valid passport/immigrant´s passport/travel document or a valid residence card, you should not travel now. If you travel without valid travel documents, you may experience problems at the airport, when you enter another country or when you travel back to Norway. 

You should not book travels now before you have all the valid travel documents and a residence card. 

UDI cannot answer questions regarding border control in Norway or other countries. Neither can we give you any confirmations you can use when travelling which airlines and the border control in other countries will accept as valid documents. If you travel without a valid residence card, you need to be aware of the risks. 

If you have an application for processing, UDI cannot prioritise your application because you have planned or booked a journey.

You can upload documents for your case here. Remember that you cannot upload the documents until you have been with the police or at the VFS application center/embassy unless the police have told you to upload your documents.

If you are applying using eID (electronic ID) to renew a residence permit for family immigration or studies, or to submit a notification of citizenship for Nordic citizens, the documents must be uploaded during the application process along with the application.

EU/EEA nationals must contact the Norwegian Tax Administration to be assigned a D number or a national identification number.

EU/EEA nationals are issued a Norwegian national identity number from the Norwegian Tax Administration when they report that they have moved to Norway after they have registered. You must report moving to the Norwegian Tax Administration (external website, opens in new window).

A national identification number is a permanent identity number (external website, opens in new window).

If an EU/EEA national wants to start working before he/she has registered, they have to apply for a tax deduction card via the Norwegian Tax Administration (external website, opens in new window). The Norwegian Tax Administration can then issue a D number (external website, opens in new window) which is a temporary identity number.

When the Norwegian Tax Administration assigns identification numbers (national identity number and D number), there are some dates of birth that do not have any available identification numbers. In that case, the Norwegian Tax Administration assigns an identity number based on the date you were registered and assigned an identification number.

UDI cannot change the national identity number or D number. If you get an identification number that is based on the registration date, your date of birth is still correctly registered in our records and in the National Population Register. This means that you do not need to contact UDI to correct the date of birth in our records.

You can log in and see your date of birth information in the National Population Register (external website), and you can change it if something is wrong.
