Asylum seeker - UDI

Asylum seeker

A person is called an asylum seeker if he or she has applied for protection (asylum) in Norway and the application has not yet been finally decided.

A person is only an asylum seeker from the time he or she reported to the police in Norway and applied for protection (asylum) until UDI or UNE has assessed the application and made a final decision.

When asylum seekers have received a final answer to their applications, they are no longer called asylum seekers.

If they have received a positive answer, they are granted a residence permit as a refugee or on humanitarian grounds

If UDI's or UNE's final decision on their application is rejection, the applicant must leave Norway.
