Who are you?

  Normally, you do not have to apply

  If your application for protection (asylum) has been granted or if you arrived in Norway as a resettlement refugee, you will receive a letter from the UDI stating that you have been granted a temporary residence permit with refugee status. This letter will also state whether you have been granted a refugee travel document.

  This means that you do not need to submit a separate application to be granted a travel document.

  If your application for protection (asylum) is rejected by the UDI, but you are later granted a residence permit by the Immigration Appeals Board (UNE), you also do not need to submit a separate application for a travel document. UNE will notify the UDI, and the UDI will send you a letter that will state whether you have been granted a travel document.

  If you were not given a refugee travel document when you were given protection

  If the UDI or UNE has granted you protection, but you were told that you would not get a refugee travel document, you must check the decision letter which you received. Here it will be stated what information or what documents you must get hold of before you can be given a refugee travel document. As soon as you have got hold of this, you can apply for a renewal of your residence permit for protection. 

   

• Family member of a refugee

  If you wish to apply for a refugee travel document, you will at the same time apply for refugee status. 

  What is derived refugee status?

  • If the family member you were granted family immigration with has been granted refugee status in Norway, you can also apply for refugee status. This is called 'derived refugee status'.
  • You can be granted refugee status because UDI assumes that you risk persecution in your home country as well.
  • Refugee status gives you the same rights as your family member. For example, you will be issued a refugee travel document.
  • You apply for refugee status and a refugee travel document at the same time. If your application is approved, you will be granted a residence permit on the grounds of protection and issued a refugee travel document.
  • We recommend that you apply when you arrive in Norway, but you may also apply later.
  • If you are over the age of 18, and you are in doubt as to whether you meet the requirements for derived refugee status, you should make sure you have a valid family immigration permit until you have received an answer to your application for a refugee status. If your family immigration permit is expiring soon, you should renew it. 

  Requirements for being granted derived refugee status and a travel document

  • You must be the spouse, cohabitant or child (under the age of 18) of a refugee who has been granted protection.
  • You must have been a family before the refugee left the home country (does not apply to children born at a later date). 
  • You must have the same citizenship as the refugee.
  • You must want refugee status. If you are granted refugee status, you cannot visit your home country and you must hand in your passport from your home country.

  How to apply

• Refugee travel document if you have refugee status in another country (transfer refugee status)

  UDI can grant you a travel document if you have been given a residence permit in Norway and have refugee status in another country.

  You must:

  • have resided in Norway for more than two years, or
  • have been granted a permanent residence permit, or
  • have received permission to stay in Norway beyond the validity period of your travel document
  • have a refugee status in a country bound by the Council of Europe Convention on the Transfer of Responsibility for Refugees

  If you have received a travel document from a country that is not bound by the treaty
  You cannot get a travel document. You must meet the requirements for an immigration passport to be issued a Norwegian travel document. To read the requirements for an immigrant´s passport, you must follow this link. Enter which country you (the applicant) are a citizen of and select «Immigrant´s passport». Then choose what applies to you under "who are you", and there you can read the requirements. 

  You have refugee status in a country bound by the treaty
  If you want a Norwegian travel document, you can apply for this by using the "how to apply" button below. You must submit the foreign travel document when you apply for a Norwegian travel document, and any documents that show that you have refugee status in another country.

  You have refugee status from a country that is not bound by the treaty, or you have a permit in another European country due to your relationship with the authorities of your home country:
  UDI can consider issuing an immigration passport upon application, but you must submit your permit from the European country in which you received the residence permit.
