You have to be a Norwegian citizen in order to be granted a Norwegian passport. However, you will not automatically get a Norwegian passport when you become a Norwegian citizen. You have to apply for the passport.
Before you can apply for a passport, you must have a Norwegian national identity number, issued by the Norwegian Tax Administration (external website).
- If you live in Norway, you must submit your application for a Norwegian passport to the police (external website).
- If you live abroad, you can apply for a Norwegian passport at the nearest Norwegian embassy or consulate (external website)
If you are not a Norwegian citizen yet, you can apply for Norwegian citizenship.
