People who can work in Norway for less than three months without a residence permit

• Researchers and lecturers

  Researchers and lecturers who are to work in Norway for up to three months do not need a residence permit.

  Requirements

  • You must be a researcher who at least have a bachelor's degree, or a lecturer.

• Employees of international companies

  Some employees of international companies do not need a residence permit if they are to work in Norway for up to three months.

  Requirements

  • You must be employed by an international company that has a branch in Norway.
  • You must be employed in the foreign branch of the company.
  • You are to receive training in the Norwegian branch of the company. 

• Technical experts

  Some technical experts do not need a residence permit if they are to work in Norway for up to three months.

  Requirements

  • You must be a technical expert
  • You are to install, disassemble, inspect, repair or perform maintenance on machinery or technical equipment. You can also provide information about the use of such machinery or technical equipment. By technical equipment is meant devices, tools and IT equipment, e.g. software.
  • You cannot have an employer in Norway.
  • The assignment you are to carry out cannot exceed three months. This means that the client cannot bring in a new technical expert without a residence permit if the assignment should take more than three months. 
  • You or your client must notify the police in writing before you enter Norway. 

• Commercial and business travellers

  Some commercial and business travellers do not need a residence permit if they are to work in Norway for up to three months.

  Requirements

  • You must be a commercial or business traveller.
  • You cannot have an employer in Norway. 

  Examples of commercial and business travellers

  • persons who are to attend meetings and conferences, participate in contract-related discussions
  • shipping inspectors or veterinary inspectors
  • persons planning to sell goods at trade fairs 

• Medical practitioners

  Some medical practitioners do not need a residence permit if they are to work in Norway for up to three months.

  Requirements

  • You have an employer or client in Norway.
  • You have been issued the required authorisation or licence from the Norwegian Directorate of Health (external website).

• Religious preachers

  Some religious preachers do not need a residence permit if they are to work in Norway for up to three months.

  Requirements

  •  The employer or client cannot need a preacher in this role for more than three months.

• Athletes and their accompanying support network

  Some professional athletes and members of their accompanying support network do not need a residence permit if they are to work in Norway for up to three months.

  Requirements

  • The athlete must work as an athlete for a living.
  • You cannot have an employer in Norway.

• Journalists and photographers

  Some journalists, photographers and other employees of foreign media institutions do not need a residence permit if they are to work in Norway for up to three months.

  Requirements

  • You cannot have an employer in Norway.

• Flight crew members on aircrafts in international traffic

  In some cases, personnel on aircrafts in international traffic do not need a residence permit, if they are working on flights into and out of Norway.

  You can do the following without a residence permit

  • Work on flights to and from Norway
  • Stay overnight in Norway in connection with the flights and travel within the municipality where the airport is.
  • Travel to another Norwegian airport if you are going to be crew on a flight out of Norway from there

  Requirements

  • You must have an aviation personnel licence (flight crew or non-pilot personnel licence)
  • You cannot do any other work in Norway.
  • You cannot live in Norway.
  • You cannot stay in Norway for more than a total maximum of 90 days within a six month period.

• Staff on foreign trains, busses or trucks in international traffic

  In some cases, staff on foreign trains, busses or trucks in international traffic do not need a residence permit if they are to work in Norway for up to three months.

  Requirements

  • You cannot have an employer in Norway.

• Crews on board laid-up ships

  Necessary security and maintenance crew on foreign-owned ships laid up in Norway do not need a residence permit if they are to work in Norway for up to three months.

  Requirements

  • You must notify the police.
  • You cannot have an employer in Norway.

• Tour guides

  Tour guides accompanying foreign travel companies do not need a residence permit if they are to work in Norway for up to three months.

  Requirements

  • You cannot have an employer in Norway.
